Large lighters with a big tank and a grip

With a large lighter it is not about length but about mass: a heavier body, a bigger gas tank and a grip your hand fits around. Some people search for XXL or mega alongside it.

That size has a practical reason. More tank means refilling less often, and more body means it stays where you put it down.

What the size gets you

A small pocket lighter is empty after a few weeks if you use it daily. A bigger model simply has more gas on board, and you notice that above all with several flames: they use many times per second what a single flame does.

Weight is the other side of it. You are less likely to take a large model along, and in a kitchen drawer or a coat pocket it is unwieldy. It is very much a lighter that stays in one place.

The tank

This is the real difference. A bigger tank means reaching for the can less often, and that counts for more the more flames you choose.

The grip

A large body sits more steadily in the hand and does not wobble when you hold it longer. For fine work that is nicer than a small model between two fingers.

Does it stand up

Many large models have a foot or a flat base, so you can set it down without switching it off. That helps at the barbecue and with soldering work.

Tip

Refill with butane gas at 45 PSI and wait a minute after filling. At lower pressure the flame starts to sputter and the valve clogs up.

Buying a large lighter at PyroProducts

This category holds the heavier models: a substantial body, a decent gas tank and usually a foot underneath. With one to four jet flames and refillable with butane gas.

If you are after reach rather than bulk, so getting the flame somewhere deep, then the long lighters are where you should be. If you actually want something that fits in a trouser pocket, those are with the compact lighters.

When comparing, look at the tank size, the number of flames and whether it has a lock. Which models perform best outdoors is in the best storm lighters.

Large does mean it travels less easily. If you want one in the car and one on the terrace, a set of smaller models is more practical than a single heavy one.

With a large model, check whether the flame is adjustable. A hefty burner that only works at its highest setting is hard to meter for fine work and uses needlessly much gas.

Frequently asked questions

What is a large lighter?

A model with a substantial body and a large gas tank, often with a foot underneath. It is about mass and capacity, not length; for reach you need the long lighters.

Why choose a bigger lighter?

Mainly for the tank. More gas on board means refilling less often, and that counts for more the more flames you choose, because they use many times as much per second.

What is the difference from a long lighter?

Large is about the bulk of body and tank, long about the distance between your hand and the flame. For a fireplace you want length, for working on for a long time you want tank.

Do large lighters stand upright?

Many models have a foot or a flat base, so you can set them down in between without switching them off. That is stated per model in the information.

Are they refillable?

Yes, with butane gas at 45 PSI through the valve at the bottom. Wait a minute after filling before you light it.

Is a large lighter practical to carry along?

Less so than a pocket model. If you want one lying in several places, a set of compact models is more practical than a single heavy one.
