The short answer
If your lighter stops working, nine times out of ten it isn't actually broken. It's out of gas, the lock is on, the flame is set to its lowest, or the wrong type of gas has been used.
Check these four things below. If you still can't fix it, it's almost always down to the gas: a jet flame needs butane under high pressure, 45 PSI, which you'll find in lighter gas. Universal lighter gas from the supermarket has too little pressure and gives a weak flame that keeps going out.

Nine times out of ten, this is the cause, not a broken lighter.
Is the lock on?
Many jet flame lighters have a slide or button that blocks ignition. It's there to stop the lighter going off in your pocket. Slide it back to the open position and try again. This is by far the most common cause.
Is the gas on the lowest setting?
Turn the flame dial to the middle. On the lowest setting, too little gas escapes to ignite, which can look like an empty lighter. We recommend the middle setting for all our models: too low gives a weak flame, too high wastes gas unnecessarily.
Is the gas turned on?
A full seven-gram tank is good for around eighty to one hundred and twenty ignitions. Refill as soon as the flame gets weaker, not once nothing comes out at all. You'll find the exact steps at refilling a lighter.
Is it too cold?
Butane doesn't evaporate well below freezing point. If your lighter doesn't work outside but does indoors, that's not a fault, just physics. Hold it in your hand or inside pocket for a moment. The same applies right after refilling: fresh gas is ice-cold and needs a few minutes to warm up.

What you need
In most cases, one can of gas will do. Choose 45 PSI butane: it's the only gas that keeps a jet flame burning cleanly.

Vullen op een halfvolle tank lukt niet: de lucht die erin zit laat het gas er niet bij. Houd de aansteker rechtop en druk het vulventiel in met een kleine platte schroevendraaier tot het sissen ophoudt. Vul daarna pas bij.
Er zit vuil in het mondstuk
Een aansteker die los in een broekzak of tas zit, vult zich met pluis. Op het strand is het zand. Zodra er iets in de opening komt, brandt hij onregelmatig of helemaal niet. Blaas het mondstuk schoon met perslucht en probeer opnieuw.
Het was het verkeerde gas
Heb je er universeel lightergas in gedaan, dan blijft hij slap branden ook na een nieuwe vulling. Ontlucht hem helemaal, vul met butaan van 45 PSI en geef hem een paar minuten. Meestal is dat genoeg.
Geen zin meer in bijvullen
Kan ook. Een aansteker zonder gas bestaat: een plasma-aansteker maakt een elektrische boog en laadt op met een kabeltje. Wat dat wel en niet kan lees je in de opkomst van de plasma-aanstekers.
Wanneer is hij wél op
Soms is het einde verhaal. Loopt het gas er hoorbaar langs het ventiel weg zodra je vult, dan is de afdichting versleten en krijg je hem niet meer dicht.
Datzelfde geldt als het vonkwiel of het piëzo-element geen vonk meer geeft terwijl je het gas wel hoort stromen. Die onderdelen zijn niet los te vervangen.
Een navulbare aansteker gaat bij normaal gebruik jaren mee, en dat is precies waarom hij meer kost dan een wegwerpmodel.

Gooi een oude aansteker trouwens niet zomaar bij het restafval. Er zit altijd wat gas in achter, ook als hij niet meer ontsteekt. Bij de meeste milieustraten kan hij bij het klein chemisch afval.
Veelgestelde vragen
Meestal omdat hij nog te koud is. Vers butaan is ijskoud en zet uit; geef hem twee tot vijf minuten op kamertemperatuur. Werkt hij dan nog niet, dan zat er lucht in de tank of is het verkeerde gas gebruikt.
Butaan onder hoge druk, 45 PSI. Universeel lightergas heeft te weinig druk voor een jetflame en geeft een slappe of onregelmatige vlam. Welke bus bij jouw model past zie je bij aanstekergas.
Ongeveer tachtig tot honderdtwintig keer bij een tank van zeven gram, afhankelijk van hoe lang je de vlam aanhoudt. Vul bij zodra de vlam zwakker wordt; wachten tot hij helemaal leeg is maakt het vullen alleen lastiger.
Dan is het de temperatuur. Butaan verdampt slecht onder het vriespunt, dus in de kou komt er te weinig gas naar buiten. Houd hem kort in je hand of je binnenzak voor gebruik. Er is niets mis mee.
Ontluchten, schoonblazen en opnieuw vullen kun je zelf. Lekt het ventiel of geeft de ontsteking geen vonk meer, dan houdt het op: die onderdelen zijn niet los te vervangen. Stap voor stap vullen staat op aansteker bijvullen.
When it does work
Sometimes it really is the end. If gas audibly escapes past the valve as soon as you refill, the seal is worn out and you won't get it closed again.
The same goes if the spark wheel or piezo element no longer sparks while you can still hear the gas flowing. Those parts can't be replaced separately.
A refillable lighter lasts for years with normal use, which is exactly why it costs more than a disposable model.
